William BARNARD (London 1774 - 1849) "Sir Horatio Nelson KB (Knight of the Bath) Rear Admiral of the Blue" Rare original halftone engraving from a subject by Lemuel Francis Abbott (Leicestershire 1760ca - London 1803 or 1802) printed and published by Barnard himself in May 1798 in London at his address in Fitzroy Square. Beautiful copy in a coeval edition printed with great accuracy of tones on uncoated paper, complete with the imprint of the plate and with small margins, entirely glued on an ancient sheet of heavy paper support, slightly burnished and with some minimal defects on the edge superior but overall in excellent general condition. Horatio Nelson (Burnham Thorpe 1758 - Chief Trafalgar 1805), myth of the Royal Navy, is portrayed standing on a rock and wearing the uniform of Rear Admiral with the honor of Knight of the Bath in 1797, the left arm holds the sword and the hat, the right sleeve of the uniform is fixed to the chest as it can no longer contain the arm that had been amputated after the battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Bibliography: "Bryan's Dictionary of Painters and Engravers" London 1903 vol.1 pag.2. Chaloner Smith "British Mezzotinto portraits from the introduction of the art to the early part of the present century" London 1883 vol.1 pag.9 n ° 8. Slater "Engravings and their value" London 1912 p. 160. Measurements in mm: 644 x 408
